WEBP Format Introduction

WEBP es un formato de imagen moderno desarrollado por Google que ofrece excelente compresión

Modern format
Smaller size
Better quality

History

WebP format was released by Google in 2010 to provide better compression efficiency than JPEG and PNG. Based on VP8 video codec technology, WebP achieves 25-35% smaller file sizes than JPEG and 26% smaller than PNG while maintaining the same image quality. It has become one of the standard formats for modern web images.

Technical Features

WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression, capable of replacing both JPEG and PNG. Lossy compression uses VP8 video frame encoding technology, while lossless compression uses predictive coding. Supports alpha channel transparency (including semi-transparency) and animation (replacing GIF). Supports 8-bit color depth and can embed ICC color profiles and metadata.

Use Cases

WebP is widely used for web images, mobile app icons, online advertising, and e-commerce product images. Particularly suitable for websites needing to optimize loading speed and modern web designs requiring transparent backgrounds. An ideal choice for replacing JPEG, PNG, and GIF.

Advantages

  • 25-35% smaller than JPEG

  • Supports transparent backgrounds and semi-transparency
  • Supports animation effects
  • Wide support in modern browsers

Disadvantages
